Sunday March 9th we conducted a Extended URBEX Tour and our last stop was the Packard Automotive plant. Upon arrival we were greeted by the security firm hired by Fernando Palazuelo the current owner of the Packard. The uniformed guard did not talk to us or exit the security vehicle he was driving. Instead the neighborhood guy “John” did. John approached our van and I spoke with him. His demeanor was very aggressive, he spoke loudly, and he limped because his left leg was in a brace from a fall he encountered inside the building. I exited the van to speak with him, our group attendees remained in the van. When I spoke with John he informed he was hired by Fernando himself to be an inside security agent and no one was allowed in the buildings anymore unless escorted by him directly. He said the North (administrative side) was completely off limits. He also stated they were issuing trespassing tickets to everyone and taking their pictures as evidence. After further discussions with John we came to an agreement.
We proceeded to the South end building and went straight to the top. Our normal exit at the top was missing due to the collapse of that floor. That part of the building has a sink hole that grows daily. We dubbed it the “Packard Sink Hole” the image below is from early Fall 2012
This is the normal exit view from the top floor, the image below is from Winter 2013
So in conclusion with collapsing South Building, no access North Building, and increased Security we will probably not be touring the plant anymore. But never say never…
